EmergingLeveraging New TechnologiesNew ventures frequently suffer from the delta between expectations and execution. At least in doing the same thing over there is familiarity with what is, or is not, getting done and how to compare outcomes. With so many new products it can be very difficult for data storage professionals to separate technology fact from fiction. The simple truth is that every solution comes with a cost versus benefit profile that should balance the current state of the art with long term viability. Selenetix’ addresses these challenges by taking the time to understand the fundamental principles underlying emerging technologies and evaluating how products address real world challenges. No matter how elegant the marketing pitch, every offering is ultimately anchored by the laws of physics. Our team is constantly reviewing new and improved solutions with this in mind. For example, two important “emerged” technologies being delivered into the marketplace are iSCSI and SATA. Soon, customers will have to incorporate the next generation, Serial Attached Storage (SAS). After working in the lab and in the field with these technologies we can report that they promise to make it easier and more cost effective to meet certain data storage goals. Conversely, we know the pitfalls of matching these solutions with the wrong application, network, data type, or unreasonable expectations. As an independent product evaluator in the storage marketplace it is our responsibility to help our customers make good decisions. |
